In the parliamentary committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees, Telmo Correia told deputies that the Government will acquire a thousand ‘tasers’ within the scope of the Law on Programming of Infrastructure and Equipment of the Security Forces and Services.

The Secretary of State explained that "the Ministry of Internal Affairs asked the security forces if they considered more equipment of this type useful, and the answer was yes."

In this sense, he explained, the MAI increased the acquisition of this type of equipment to a thousand, instead of the 200 'tasers' for the GNR and 80 for the PSP initially planned.

However, Telmo Correia maintained that “Tasers are not a magic solution”.

In parliament, the Secretary of State also gave an update on the status of cameras in police uniforms, known as ‘bodycams’, indicating that the MAI general secretariat had been instructed to move forward with the process and that the platform that will manage this equipment had already been awarded.

“Very soon we will have the platform and then the public tender for the acquisition of the cameras will be launched”, he said, stressing that the ‘bodycams’ could be acquired in six months, the time it takes for a public tender.
