The Points Card system, which came into force on 1 June 2016, aims to penalise infractions and reward drivers who adopt good practices on the roads. When a driver's license is obtained, 12 initial points are automatically assigned, which can increase or decrease depending on the driver's behaviour, according to a report by Postal.
To find out how many points you currently have, you can consult this information online, through the Driver's Desk or the Traffic Violations Portal. Authentication on these platforms can be done in three ways:
- Digital Mobile Key (CMD)
- Citizen Card
- Individual Taxpayer Registration (CPF) and access password (only on the Traffic Violations Portal, for already registered users).
Loss of points
Points are deducted according to the severity of the offense committed:
- Serious infraction → Lose 2 points
- Very serious infraction → Lose 4 points
- Traffic crime → Lose 6 points
In some specific situations, infractions may have greater penalties:
- Some serious infractions can take away 3 points
- Some very serious infractions can take away 5 points
- Minor infractions do not result in loss of points on your driver's license.
Earning points
To encourage good driving practices, drivers can recover points if they do not commit infractions:
- If you do not commit any serious or very serious infractions or traffic crimes for 3 years, you will earn 3 points.
- If, during the CNH revalidation period, you do not commit traffic crimes and voluntarily participate in traffic safety training, you will earn 1 point, up to a limit of 16 points in total.
What happens if you lose a lot of points?
The system provides for gradual consequences for drivers who accumulate infractions and lose a significant number of points:
- If you only have 4 or 5 points → You are required to attend road safety training.
- If you only have 1 to 3 points → You will have to retake the theoretical driving test.
- If you lose all points (0 points) → You will lose your driver's license and will have to wait 2 years to be able to get it again.
