The Algarve municipality was "recognised for its commitment to implementing policies and actions that promote balanced, sustainable and responsible tourism, based on the principles set out in the SDGs, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, whether environmental, cultural or socio-economic”, as mentioned in a statement by the Loulé City Council.
“The award of the certificate is based on an audit of a set of criteria in the areas of Destination Management, Nature and Landscapes, Environment and Climate, Culture and Tradition, Social Welfare, Business and Communication.”
The award will bring Loulé a place “in an international network and access to the good practices of other destinations with the same label.” There will also be access to tools created by “Green Destinations”, allowing the evaluation of “various aspects of sustainability performance.”
The “millions of tourists” that visit Loulé municipality “every year” will have a “guarantee that they are in a territory that excels in good sustainability practices”, possibly attracting even more tourists.
According to the City Hall, “Loulé has been a pioneering municipality in the country when it comes to sustainability.” Being the first municipality in Portugal to ever approve a Municipal Climate Action Plan.
