The restaurant is packed, the air full of Chicken piri-piri, the hot menu do amigo favourite. Somewhere along the year, so far, have been re-homing with gratitude. “Especially for several cats APAA have placed with Corinne at Carvoeiro Cat Charity shelter, and her wonderful team of volunteers.”

Jenny Clarke, President of The Association for Protection of Animals Algarve, has been busy alongside Anita with ‘Pop-Up’ Shops, events, and ARA Ambassadorial work for ‘Legacy for Pets’. “We’ve given help to a lot of people needing a hand with paying vet bills, also to small charities where money is tight.”

APAA, once a shelter, knows only too well the hardship charities and shelters face when there is a sudden cry for help and the money is running short. “I know it’s a tough ask, especially when the membership are feeling the grip of the tax man on their purse, but that’s when animals get dumped. That extra mouth to feed, especially if it is a pregnant cat or dog, has to go!” Taking animals off the street or out of the rubbish bins is costly.

They have to be re-chipped, steralised and re-homed, if at all possible. In between all of this, there is feeding, paying the vet bills. Finding a temporary foster home. “We need volunteers at every level. The charity shops sometimes have a need for assistance, car-boot sales. Cat colonies feeding, there are lots of jobs that would suit all kinds of people from all kinds of age groups.”

Busily making notes, the ‘Pop-Up’ team knows they will need re-stocking for the next season. “We’ve got it all, and then suddenly, shelves are bare and we need to rethink logistics. So if you have anything for the home, garden or balcony, please don’t throw it away, think APAA!” Jenny laughs. “Clothing. Books, ornaments and lighting. All are very popular in the shops. Some of the items we have are new or just barely used. If you need help with transport. Let us know! We can collect.”

In the meantime, Anita is swatting up on her ‘Legacy Ambassadorial’ information, so that if she can help you help your pets, then she’s just a call away. “The ‘Legacy Pet Plan’ is tailor-made for individuals. Jackie’s sensational mouth-watering lunches are still bookable!
