The price of half a dozen eggs was 1.61 euros on January 1st and reached 2.06 euros on June 25th, thus registering an increase of 27.95% or 45 cents, revealed the data compiled by the Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection.

The biggest increase was seen in the first quarter, with the price worsening by 27.3% from January to March 26th. During this period, half a dozen eggs became 44 cents more expensive. Even so, since the beginning of the year and until March 12, this value has not exceeded €1.70.

Between March 26 and April 16, the value remained stable at €2.05. On April 23, it reached a maximum of €2.07, which was repeated on May 14, June 11 and 18. In the second quarter, the price of a carton with half a dozen eggs increased by one cent, going from €2.05 to €2.06.

The rise in the price of eggs began to be felt in the US due to the shortage of this food, exacerbated by bird flu, which led to the slaughter of millions of chickens.

In early March, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, accused his predecessor, Joe Biden, of leaving the country in an “economic catastrophe and an inflationary nightmare”, including a shortage of eggs in many supermarkets or with extremely high prices.
