The Minister of Infrastructure, Miguel Pinto Luz, announced that the runway's structural reinforcement work, costing €50 million, should be completed by March 2026.
The improvement and expansion of Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is one of the measures included in the TAP privatization plan, announced by the government this Thursday, which provides for the sale of up to 49.9% of the Portuguese airline's capital.
According to Miguel Pinto Luz, ANA is working on developing the Porto Airport expansion plan, which should be presented either later this year or early next year.
The expansion of Sá Carneiro Airport has been a demand for several years, following years of strong growth. The government itself has stated its desire to support infrastructure growth and to establish Porto as a second hub in Portugal.
The expansion plan aims to strengthen the airport's capacity to accommodate increased demand in the long term, in addition to expanding the entire airport complex, promoting greater operational efficiency and connectivity, reinforcing the regional hub strategy, and positioning Francisco Sá Carneiro as a benchmark airport in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.
Concurrently, work is underway to improve the runway. The 50 million euro investment will include structural reinforcement of the pavement, replacing the lighting and drainage systems, and installing a new lighting system for operation in low visibility conditions.
These works began on July 31st of last year and were expected to last 19 months. According to the Government's presentation, the works are projected to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

So you can come up with 50 million to expand the airport, but you can't get the train system up to the standard of other European countries...

Hi, OK so how does this expansion change the airport capacity and traffic? You say “looking at long term” but without the content I have no idea how much Porto airport currently deals with and how does this traffic change it. I notice over the last several years more flights fly over the city. Does this mean more air pollution ?? You are ‘journalists’ so please give us more analysed information!

The airport of Porto is excellent and the size for the city. What is needed is a better organisation and limit the flights. It would be better get an extension of the trains lines to the airport communication and fix the trains line system - avoiding internal flights in Portugal. There are so many new technologies included trains without rails.
