In 2024, 38,037 accidents with victims were recorded nationwide (1,364 more than in 2023), 477 fatalities (-4), 2,756 serious injuries (+139), and 44,618 minor injuries (+1,625).
Regarding enforcement, not all entities contributed to the increase, as the Lisbon Municipal Police saw a 42% decrease, and the PSP saw an 8.5% decrease, according to the "Annual Report on 24-Hour Accidents and Road Enforcement 2024".
The ANSR's National Speed Enforcement System (SINCRO) and the National Republican Guard (GNR) recorded enforcement increases of 46.9% and 97.8%, respectively.
These operations resulted in more than 1.5 million violations, a 10.1% decrease compared to 2023.
A total of 27,900 drivers were arrested in 2024, a 31.2% decrease compared to the previous year, the majority (55.8%) due to the presence of alcohol in their blood.
The majority of violations, 60.5%, were due to speeding (5.9% less than in 2023).
There were also decreases in violations related to seat belt use and blood alcohol levels (-23.2% and -23.1%, respectively).
Collisions were the most frequent cause of accidents in 2024, accounting for 53.6%, followed by skids, which accounted for 33.0% of all accidents and resulted in the most fatalities.
Light vehicles were the most frequently involved in accidents, accounting for 70.8% of the total, the report states, highlighting that "significant increases" were observed in accidents involving bicycles (+11.2% compared to 2023) and motorcycles (+6.8%).
Accidents involving agricultural vehicles increased by 20.6% last year compared to the previous year, causing 165 deaths in 2024 and 130 in 2023.
