Sweden plans to rent up to 600 jail cells in Estonia to handle soaring inmate numbers as gang violence intensifies and longer sentences are pushing prisons to their limits.

The first transfers could be expected by 2026, with the logistics for travel for both prisoners and families being taken into account by the parliaments before approval.
The government is also debating whether to lower the age of criminal responsibility from 15 to 14 amid a rise in youth crimes.
