Jenny President, admits. “Sometimes it is a real scratch around, to see if someone is available. The summer months are the worst. Of course, for every business or charity, it will be the same.” Over the many years of working at a shelter, APAA knows that the work can be hard and unrewarding.
“We try and help wherever we can. It isn’t easy, as we know that every call counts. Everyone feels they are on the edge of despair and that a helping hand is what is needed. Not just words.” True. ‘Here to Help’ means that. APAA’s long-standing motto. “We are not here just to help the community’s individuals, but also the local charities. Sometimes there is a shortfall of financial funding. We try and dig deep to help.”
Jenny smiles. “We are not here to play ‘God’, we are here as an association to try and fill the gap when needed, when we can.” There is a lull at the moment with the closure of ‘Pop-Up’ Shops and Car-boot sales, for the summer, but their small, interesting lunch events still take place. Jackie is still working hard on her special lunch menus. Not only do the lunches raise money for APAA and their furry friends, but they also help those in need. The attendees are chosen from the hat so to speak, and a good mix of interests is guaranteed. The food is always mouth-wateringly delicious and beautifully prepared and presented. Seats have to be kept to a minimum due to space, but they have grown to be very popular indeed. If you are interested, make contact. Send an email requesting to be put on the list.

APAA’s shop in Silves is bursting with goodies. But they need a helper for Fridays and Tuesdays. Needless to say, it is a team effort at the shops always a friendly welcome. “Helping hands and our motto ‘Here to Help’ are synonymous with what we do,” Jenny adds. “It is a chance for someone to socialise and meet people.” If someone out there wants a part-time job, why not volunteer? “If you can’t do the whole morning, I am sure an hour or two would be most agreeable! Whatever you can spare.” Whilst the ‘Pop-Up’ Shops and Car-boots are closed for the summer, don’t forget the Charity shops! Whilst going to press, we have just received an offer of part-time help from a young student. Any more out there? Work experience? Go on!
