According to its August bulletin, the investment plan, to be completed by 2026, focuses on rehabilitating the main canal, automating irrigation systems, and digitising the network. The aim is to promote more efficient water use, cut losses, and enable real-time monitoring, with funding provided under the Rural Development Programme (PDR 2020).
ABM estimates these measures will reduce water losses by about 15%, equivalent to roughly two cubic hectoremetres, increasing availability in the Mira Irrigation Scheme. It noted that the current water levels at the Santa Clara reservoir present “a unique opportunity” to implement structural reforms that enhance resilience in the sector.
In addition to infrastructure works, the association is carrying out comprehensive studies and projects to ensure water security, adapt infrastructure to climate demands, and improve irrigation efficiency. Around €145,000 is being invested in Santa Clara reservoir studies to modernise the electrical network and automate control systems.
At Corte Brique dam, €108,000 is being allocated to rupture and downstream damage studies, as well as developing an internal emergency plan, alert system, observation plan, and contingency measures for extreme events.
ABM has also completed strategic studies worth €723,000 for the rehabilitation and modernisation of the Mira Irrigation Scheme, including energy efficiency assessments and projects to restore siphons and regulation reservoirs.
Planned works include replacing irrigation networks, upgrading distribution systems, waterproofing canals, and installing solar panels. These investments aim to reinforce the region's resilience to water scarcity and ensure more sustainable water management, directly benefiting agriculture and the economy of southwest Alentejo.
