According to a source at ANEPC, the two Fire Boss medium-lift aircraft from Sweden and the two Canadair heavy-lift aircraft from Greece will remain in the country until Friday, the 29th. These four aircraft, also operating under the European support mechanism, are scheduled to return to their home countries on Saturday, the 30th.
The French Super Puma helicopter departed Monte Real Air Base today, after completing its mission in Portugal on Sunday, where it had been operating since the 20th under the European Civil Protection Mechanism, activated by Portugal on August 15th.
Portugal also deployed two Moroccan Canadairs to fight the fires, but under a bilateral cooperation agreement.
Also under the European mechanism, firefighters from Malta remain in Portugal.
Between August 1st and 15th, a contingent of approximately 20 firefighters from Latvia was stationed in Trancoso, and since the 16th, a Maltese team, also with approximately 20 members, has been deployed in Almeirim, in two shifts: from August 16th to 31st and from September 1st to 15th, according to the European Commission.
Continental Portugal has been affected by multiple large rural fires since July, especially in the North and Central regions.
The fires have caused four deaths, including a firefighter, and several injuries, some serious, and have completely or partially destroyed first and second homes, as well as farms, livestock, and forestry.
According to provisional official data, as of August 23, around 250,000 hectares had burned in the country, more than 57,000 of which were in the fire that started in Arganil alone.
It’s a shame Portugal couldn’t provide its own aircraft in readiness leading up to the fire season. Incredible the aircraft were not available due to spare parts!!
