Over the past decade, the number of people over 70 who continue to work has doubled, according to Correio da Manhã, citing Social Security data. Better health conditions, but also necessity, justify this surge in employees over 70.
According to the newspaper, while in 2015 there were 13,974 people over 70 still working in Portugal, by 2024 that number had jumped to 28,936. Of this total, the majority (19,703) are men.
It's important to note that last year, the legal retirement age was set at 66 years and four months, a higher value than in 2015 (66 years). The retirement age is updated annually, based on the average life expectancy at 65. Currently, it is set at 66 years and seven months, but will rise to 66 years and nine months next year.
