The initiative began this weekend with an educational proposal that combines fun, protection and conservation.

Zoomarine Algarve inaugurated a new space at KidZania Portugal last Saturday, 23 May, where the youngest can take on the role of guardians of the oceans in an immersive experience linked to the protection and recovery of marine animals.

Inspired by the work carried out by Porto d’Abrigo - Zoomarine's marine species reception and rehabilitation centre, in operation since 2002, this new activity brings to the KidZania universe a realistic simulation of the various stages of rescue, treatment and return of marine animals to their natural habitat.

With sea turtles as the main focus, the experience allows children to take on different professional roles, such as veterinarians, biologists, veterinary nurses, or water quality technicians. From rescuing an animal in danger to clinical diagnosis, monitoring environmental conditions, and making the final decision to return it to the ocean, the experiment was designed to reflect, in a practical and engaging way, the work done daily in the field.

Throughout the activity, participants are confronted with real challenges such as the impacts of pollution - namely plastic -, capture in fishing nets, or the degradation of marine habitats. This approach not only reinforces scientific literacy but also stimulates critical thinking, teamwork, and responsibility in children.

In addition to the educational component, this initiative allows Zoomarine's messages to reach beyond the Algarve, expanding the reach of its environmental awareness actions to other audiences and reinforcing its presence at the national level.

For Tiago Pierotti, Executive Director of Zoomarine Algarve, “this partnership marks a significant moment in establishing Zoomarine Algarve as an active agent in environmental education in Portugal. By bringing Porto d’Abrigo to KidZania, we broaden the reach of our mission, bringing new generations closer to a reality that demands knowledge, awareness, and action. It is through this type of experience that we can transform curiosity into commitment and contribute consistently to the protection of the oceans.”

Sérgio Correia, General Director of KidZania Lisbon, emphasises that “it is a privilege to have a partner like Zoomarine, whose experience and educational vision align perfectly with KidZania's purpose and mission. The essence of our concept lies in creating educational experiences connected to the real world, and this partnership allows us to bring children closer to fundamental themes such as science, nature preservation, and environmental responsibility, in a practical, engaging, and fun way.” Through this initiative, Zoomarine and KidZania reinforce their commitment to creating experiences with a positive impact, where entertainment is combined with education to create memorable moments for the whole family and inspire more conscious and responsible behaviours in new generations.
