The initial goal of 100kg was exceeded by the 8 confectioners that entered this adventure. The candy was presented, and tasted by visitors on the first day of the event.
The herculean task of making the greatest Dom Rodrigo in the world was attended by two technicians and a Guinness World Records representative who controlled the rigorous process of making the candy. For 3 days (July 24 – July 26) the 8 local confectioners prepared the delicacy based on the most traditional recipe from the Nossa Senhora do Carmo Convent in Lagos.
On Friday July 26, came Guinness´s certification with the confirmation of exceeding the goal with a magnificent 126.7kg. The world´s greatest Dom Rodrigo was then presented to the public at the opening of the 32nd Arte Doce Contest Fair on July 26, following speeches by the President of the Algarve Tourism Region, João Fernandes and the Mayor of Lagos, Maria Joaquina Matos, who was proud of the confectioners that contributed to enhance one of the greatest gastronomic treasures of the Algarve and the municipality.
Once unwrapped, the candy was offered and tasted by all visitors of the new edition of Arte Doce who were able to participate in the experience of seeing Lagos and Dom Rodrigo entered in the most prestigious high score worldwide.
The initiative to make the largest Dom Rodrigo in the world arises from the Municipality´s efforts to promote the iconic sweet Algarve, currently one of the district finalists of the 7 Wonders of Portugal contest, program of RTP1. The district final will take place on August 16 and you can vote until that day through the number 760 107 136 (0.60€ + VAT).
