Parliament has approved new legislation to tackle cigarette butt disposal. The proposed legislation was brought forth by the PAN (People Animals Nature) party’s only Member of Parliament, André Silva, who is concerned about the estimate that “in Portugal about 7,000 cigarette butts are tossed on the floor each minute”.
The bill sees that, on the one hand, establishments are equipped with ashtrays, while on the other hand, hefty fines are applied to those throwing cigarette butts on the floor.
The document will now be handed to the Commission for the Environment, Territorial Configuration, Decentralisation, Local Power and Habitation for further consideration.
On the GROUND, not the floor.

Cigarette butts are a very serious source of plastic pollution and toxic chemicals entering the environment, and when carelessly thrown when still smouldering, can cause wildfires.
