The praise came in a statement issued by the party leaders just as António Guterres ended his term of office as the High Commissioner, a post he held from 2005 to 2015.
The Socialists “believe it is the most basic justice to publicly thank (him)” for his work “with refugees and the defence of human rights”.
“António Guterres has a unique political background and has always been an example of dedication to public causes, the service of people and human dignity. That was how he conducted himself as general secretary of the Socialist Party and prime minister, among other positions”, the note said.
