The special session of the UN General Assembly about the global problem of drugs started in New York on Wednesday for the heads of state and governments to assess the successes and failures of the world’s policies towards drugs that have been applied over the last decades.
The “Portuguese case” in the area of drugs policy has the right to a special session on Wednesday with the participation of the Deputy Health secretary, Fernando Araújo, and the president of the Intervention Service for Addictive Behaviour and Dependences (SICAD), João Goulão, according to the official agenda.
The decision to decriminalise drug consumption in Portugal is the highlight of the Portuguese policy in this area.
The 2001 legislation stopped considering as a crime drug consumption and the acquisition and possession for own consumption.
