190 reports were raised in the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park because of poorly parked caravans and wild camping during an operation involving 25 military personnel from the GNR Coastal Control Unit and 21 nature watchers today (18 September).
Overnight caravan parking and wild camping can lead to "habitat destruction" and "illegal occupation" of space, accompanied by "uncontrolled waste disposal".
ICNF is preparing, together with local authorities, a "guiding manual" to increase the offer of motor home parks in Southwest Alentejo.

What a joke. GNR, leave the campers alone and go to do some work like arresting criminals.
You are just waisting tax payers money on jobs like that and bothering people that just wanna be relaxed. Be ashamed!

Wild camping in Portugal is not illegal. However, camping in protected areas is! We wild camp regularly and are sympathetic to the environment and abide by local laws. We have been approached by the GNR when camping and they were absolutely fine, even had a coffee. It's about respecting the environment!
