The DGS bulletin also reveals that 6,684 people are hospitalised, 91 fewer than on Tuesday, of which 877 are in intensive care units, another 25.
Today's data also reveals that 11,218 people were reported to have recovered, bringing the number of recovered people up to 563,174 since the beginning of the pandemic in Portugal in March 2020. Today was thus the third consecutive day that the number of recovered exceeded new infections.
Since March 2020, Portugal has recorded 13,257 deaths associated with covid-19 and 740,944 cases of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, with 164,513 cases now active, 2,375 fewer than on Tuesday.
Health authorities have 209,261 contacts under surveillance, 6,275 fewer than the previous day.
Regarding the 240 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, 130 occurred in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, 46 ??in the Central region, 43 in the North region, 16 in the Alentejo, four in the Algarve region and one in the Autonomous region of Madeira.
In the region of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, 4,544 new infections were reported, with 272,471 cases and 5,230 deaths so far.
The North region recorded 2,365 new infections by SARS-CoV-2 in the last 24 hours and since the beginning of the pandemic it has already registered 311,373 cases of infection and 4,654 deaths.
In the Central region, 1,387 more cases were recorded, with 105,421 infections and 2,353 deaths.
In the Alentejo, 389 more cases were reported, totalling 25,941 infections and 721 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in Portugal.
The Algarve region has today reported 267 new cases, adding up to 17,836 infections and 230 deaths.
Madeira registered 120 new cases. This autonomous region accounts for 4,341 infections and 44 deaths due to covid-19.
In the Autonomous Region of the Azores, 11 new cases were registered in the last 24 hours, totalling 3,561 infections and 25 deaths.
Confirmed cases are distributed across all age groups, with the highest number of infections between 20 and 59 years of age.
Of the total fatalities, 6,905 were men and 6,352 women.
The largest number of deaths continues to be concentrated in the elderly over 80 years old, followed by the age group between 70 and 79 years old.
Of the total of 13,257 deaths, 8,924 were people over 80 years old, 2,706 aged between 70 and 79 years old and 1,127 were between 60 and 69 years old.
