In a statement published on the official website, the UEFA Executive Committee explained that the effect of the pandemic on the organisation of the events, with several restrictions in force in terms of travel in Europe, has resulted in the cancellation of both events.

“Although it is regrettable that no youth competition can take place this season, UEFA stresses that the health and safety of young athletes should be the priority,” reads the organisation’s note.

The men’s U19 European Championship was due to take place between 30 June and 13 July in Romania.

In qualifying, Portugal was exempt from playing in the group stage, due to its position in the UEFA ranking, and already having a guaranteed place in the ‘play-offs’ of the final stage.

The women’s Europeans were scheduled to take place between 21 July and 2 August, in Belarus. In 2020, the tournament, which was due to be held in Georgia, was also cancelled for the same reason.
