As a publication that supports all business in Portugal and the tourism industry, as well as our UK readers, the UK citizens based in the Algarve, the UK citizens (and citizens of other nationalities) employed in the tourist industry and the UK citizens that love to visit the Algarve each year we want to help to rectify this situation.
As such we have launched this campaign to raise awareness of the unique Portuguese situation and put forward logical reasoning as to why the UK government should change their mind.
We are asking our readers and those that support the changing of the decision of moving Portugal off the green list to send a lobby letter to their local MP.
As well as you, our readers, supporting the campaign, we at The Portugal News will also be working to highlight the campaign through letters to Boris Johnson and other key members of the British government, contact with the Portuguese authorities and sharing the campaign across our social media platforms with more than 75,000 followers. We will also be publishing regular updates in our printed newspaper which reaches 60,000 people a week and 600,000 unique visitors to our website each month.
The Portugal News is committed to working with the local community and businesses to ensure that Portugal continues to be recognised as the safe destination that it always has been and continues to be.
If you disagree with the decision of the UK Government to continue to leave Portugal off the green list, then please visit https://www.theportugalnews.com/news/2021-06-07/lobby-your-mp-to-put-portugal-on-the-green-list/60281 to find out how to lobby UK ministers.
Current infections rates in both Portugal and the UK are growing massively.
The R rate of the Delta variant according to Sir Tom Hunter,a leading epidemiologist is R8
That means one person infects 8.Do the maths.
The last thing we need is to risk everything we have already sacrificed.

As a British citizen, it is admirable to make the UK aware of what Portugal has to offer. A little more emphasis on the inside in making the British and others more welcome would not go a miss. Having lived and worked in South Africa for 22 years before retiring, in 2017, to Portugal it takes some time to enjoy the country unless one understands Portuguese, Spanish, and or French. South Africa has eleven official languages yet the ATMs offer, one being English. When telephonically calling a company the same five languages are offered, in the appropriate Language. Unlike here when the message is in Portuguese. I made a complaint at the ticket office re the kid's ride on the back steps of the trams after my wife and I had been given 2 finger salute only to be told there is no way to make a complaint. Small things like this can make or break a holiday with either a good or an adverse feeling. My work involved visiting, general and technical communication with Germany, Italy, Japan, and China all of whom communicate in English. By not allowing, more English in Portugal is extremely detrimental to its progress and expansion.

Portugal has the Covid 19 under control. The British Government should move Portugal back to the green list. So that British citizens could travel to Portugal, and Portuguese citizens can also travel to Britain . It works vise versa. What the British Government is doing is affecting citizens in both countries and businesses.

Seeing how the situation is developing in the UK it is probably wise to keep the lights amber.

Are you all out of your minds. With the Indian (Delta) variant 90% of the cases in the UK and 60% more transmissible and numbers in the UK increasing every day, WHY? Why are you so desperate to bring it here? Portugal had been doing so well. Then after letting our guard down we too are on the rise.
All the good work we have done is for nothing. Again.
The covid tests give false negatives (as well as false positives).
Let's keep the Indian variant out of Portugal.
Let's stay safe. At least like this we can get our numbers in Portugal back down and we can start to live our lives without fear.

I wrote to my local MP and this is his reply:
"I’m afraid I don’t have the power to change the government’s policy on quarantine nor am I privy to the statistics in which they are basing their decisions. I spoke to Mark Drakeford about this last night and made some similar points to those you raise. But in the end this is a decision taken by Boris Johnson and the government in Westminster for the whole UK.
I’m sorry for the situation this leaves you in"
So, the MPs are powerless and its just Boris and whatever undisclosed statistics he is supposedly using. So some of us are unable to return to the UK because we cannot afford to now.

We have enough problems with the rise in infections in Lisbon and with the possibility of a third wave of the Indian virus in the UK, best the British stay home, We should be restricting their entry not encouraging them!

What a stupid campaign, have you not seen how bad Covid is in the UK with 7000 cases a day going apparently you 50000 per day in the next 3 weeks.
Boris ruined it all by not closing the border to India, and now to allow the UK to send hundreds of thousands of Covid India variant infected tourists with or without vaccines is lunacy.
Please stop this stupid ridiculous campaign now!!!
