According to a statement from the Territorial Command of Aveiro, the GNR, “through the Territorial Post of Vale de Cambra, on 15 August, arrested a 48-year-old man for the crime of forest fire, in the municipality of Vale de Cambra”.
“During a patrol, the GNR was informed on the existence of a fire and went to the place, where the suspect was found with a lighter in his hand, trying to set a fire”, describes the statement.
According to the GNR: “the man was arrested and the material used in the ignition was seized”, being presented to the Judicial Court of Vale de Cambra for first interrogation on 16 August.
Unfortunately there are those Portuguese that do as this man did every year. My first trip to Portugal in 1979 with my parents opened my eyes to a % of society that are full of “inveja” against others better off in life. Setting fires is a easy way of inflicting damage at others/society. Most man/woman caused fires are deliberate, unfortunately.
I live in British Columbia and we too are battling multiple forest fires. Rarely do we hear of a deliberately set inferno. Our forest fires are caused by lightening or careless campers, rarely by deliberate spite.

Hope he gets a long and hard prison sentence, so it scares other vandalists from doing the same. Man made fires in Europe is a huge problem and we need more video surveillance cameras to protect the forests

One has to be clearly insane to intentionally try and start a fire during this dry season. I think that the person or persons should be admitted for observation, because clearly they are not thinking straight. The carnage that it will cause is too large to comprehend.

Often the fires are deliberately set so as to clear the forests. The criminals want the land cleared to grow fast-growing eucalyptus trees for the pulp/paper industry. Greed!
