Paula Leitão, meteorologist at the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), said to CNN Portugal, that by the weekend temperatures will exceed 30 degrees in some parts of the country.

He added that this situation should continue for at least the first few days of next week, since there are still no forecasts beyond that date, but that the trend should be favourable.

"The trend is for temperatures to remain high, with light to temporarily moderate wind. It won't cool down much at night," explained the meteorologist.

Although the month of May is usually marked by some variations in temperatures, the weather should be slightly warmer than average for this time of year.

Therefore, for this Saturday, maximums of 31 degrees are expected for Lisbon (which, together with Beja, will be the warmest districts), 27 degrees for Porto and 26 degrees for Faro.
