In a statement, the National Maritime Authority said that the citizen was accompanied by a second person, 25 years old.

The alert was given at 16:12, for Pequena do Rodízio beach.

"The two victims were rescued by a surfer who was nearby, and one of the victims, a 38-year-old man of German nationality, was in an unconscious state, resuscitation was initiated by INEM elements. After several attempts at resuscitation, it was not possible to revive the man, and the death was declared on the spot by the INEM doctor."

The second victim was assisted at the scene, and was later transported to hospital, in a state of shock, by the members of the Volunteer Firefighters of Almoçageme.
