In a statement, the Porto City Council said that the festivities of São João will force traffic restrictions on the night of the 23rd to the 24th of June, which is why it advises the use of public transport for "better mobility and safety".
After two years of interruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the festivities of São João return to the city and with the fireworks being launched from the Douro River.
This year, the usual stage on Avenida dos Aliados will be replaced by three stages: one in Rossio square in the Palácio de Cristal Gardens, another in Largo Amor de Perdição (in the Cordoaria area) and finally, one in Praça da Casa da Música.
The festivities will force traffic restrictions in the Baixa, Casa da Música, Cordoaria and Luis I bridge areas.
In downtown, traffic will be prohibited, between 20:00 on the 23rd and 03:00 on the 24th of June, at Rua D.Pedro V, Rua da Piedade, Praça da Galicia, Rua da Torrinha, Rua de Aníbal Cunha, Sacadura Cabral street, Rua Álvares Cabral, Praça da República, Rua Gonçalo Cristóvão, Rua Santa Catarina, Rua Escola Normal, Rua D. João IV, Rua S. Vítor, Avenida Basílio Teles, Viaduto do Cais das Pedras, Rua Monchique, Rua Nova da Alfândega, Rua Reboleira, Cais da Ribeira, Avenida Gustavo Eiffel and Aveida Paiva Couceiro.
In this area, stopping and parking will be prohibited, between 2:00 pm on the 23rd and 6:00 am on the 24th of June, on Avenida dos Aliados, Praça do General Humberto Delgado, Rua do Dr. António Luís Gomes, Rua Estevão, Rua Trindade, Rua Fernandes Tomás, Rua Alferes Malheiro, Rua Dr. Ricardo Jorge, Rua dos Heróis e dos Mártires de Angola, Rua de Camões, Rua de Ramalho Ortigão, Rua de Guilherme da Costa Carvalho, Rua de Rodrigues Sampaio, Largo da Lapa and Rua de Alexandre Herculano.
In the Casa da Música area, traffic will be restricted on Rua Ofélia Diogo da Costa, Rua de Cinco de Outubro, Rua dos Vanzeleres and Rua Helena Sá Costa.
On Rua de Quinze de Novembro, Rua Ofélia Diogo da Costa, Rua de Cinco de Outubro and Rua dos Vanzeleres, stopping and parking will be prohibited between 15:00 on the 23rd and 06:00 on the 24th of June.
Also in the Cordoaria area, traffic will be restricted in the field of Mártires da Pátria. In this area of the city, one-way streets will be established on Rua de S. Bento da Vitória and Rua do Professor Vicente José de Carvalho.
A narrowing of the lane on Rua da Restauração is also planned between 20:30 on the 23rd and 06:00 on the 24th of June.
In addition to the constraints in these areas of the city, the Luís I bridge will also have restrictions, with the closure of pedestrian circulation on the lower deck between 19:00 on the 23rd and 07:30 on the 24th, and the closure of pedestrian circulation on the upper deck from 23:00 on the 23rd and "until safety conditions are guaranteed for its reopening", estimating the municipality that it will take place around 03:00 on Friday.
As with pedestrian circulation, the circulation of the metro on the upper deck will also be restricted between 23:45 on the 23rd and "until safety conditions are guaranteed for its reopening".
The Porto City Council suggests that pedestrian circulation between the banks should be done through the Infante bridge.
On June 23, Romana, Saul and Marante will take the stage at Palácio de Cristal, at 20:00. At 10:00 pm, in Largo Amor de Perdição, the revelers are Toy and José Malhoa, and at 11:30 pm, in Casa da Música square, it's Chico da Tina's turn.
