“By the end of 2022, we will have completed the process of
creating the Portuguese Agency for Migration and Asylum, which will
structurally change the design and the way we welcome and integrate those who
arrive here”, said Ana Catarina Mendes.
The minister, as well as the Secretary of State for Equality
and Migration, Isabel Almeida Rodrigues, is being heard at the Committee on
Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees, to present the work
done so far.
Ana Catarina Mendes stressed that this agency follows the
restructuring of the SEF, which separates administrative attributions from
police attributions, leaving administrative attributions within the agency's
purview.
The minister stressed that the Government wants to improve
not only the responses to the entry of migrants into Portugal, but also to
integration, adding that work is being done to analyse contributions so that
“as soon as possible” the review of the organic law of the High Commissioner
for Migration (ACM).
Refugees
The official justified this need with the fact that the ACM
has seen a “significant” increase in its competences, spheres of action and
target audience, as it works not only at the level of migrant integration, but
also refugee reception.
On this last issue, the minister revealed that in 2022
alone, Portugal received “13 times more refugees than in the last five years
combined”.
“Therefore, we intend to change the organic law of operation
of the ACM to improve the efficiency of integration responses”, deepening the
articulation between measures and public services, but also for the
“continuation of promoting the appreciation of diversities in Portuguese
society”.
She pointed out that since January of this year nine more
National Immigrant Support Centers (CNAIM) have opened and that they have been
diversifying the entities with which they work.
“Let us not have any illusions, migratory flows are here to
stay and so is our need for manpower and to fight demography”, stressed Ana
Catarina Mendes.
Change for winging Brits & Sec Home Owners Shameful. The truth is they only like Portugal for the Sun & Tax Free Benefits. All what they can not get in their country they have no other interest what so ever for been in Portugal. Make them speak Portuguese before allowing them to flood to our country and see the difference.

J shame on you. How wrong you are.Actually us brits that live in Portugal are not a burden on the state when we buy houses we pay a lot of tax and other charges when we buy cars we pay tax when we pay for fuel and the weekly food shop we pay tax. When we use the health service Portugal can claim money back for any treatment we have from the uk if you have a uk state pension , we spend money in restaurants bars and shops in covid lockdown a lot of places would have closed down if we did not use them so some can’t speak good Portuguese not the end of the world.

I´ve spent enough time holidaying in Portugal to estimate that the `J´s´ make up a sizeable proportion of the population. They show no genuine interest in you, unless you are handing over dosh.
The country gets away with it due to it´s good climate, otherwise it would be on a par with some pretty obscure places in the world.

I'm British and although I don't agree with the tone, I understand J's frustrations. Foreigners here have no idea how difficult is for the majority of Portuguese people, and it's getting worse. People here have not worked any less than foreigners and yet they are experiencing extreme gentrification, being pushed out of their towns and cities to the hills for those coming in, using their houses for 3 months a year and paying proportionally much less tax. It's easy to see why frustration turns to anger. Yes there are many benefits of foreigners coming, sadly, very few of them are passed onto the the 'average João'.

I tend to agree with Wes. Besides "joao" is not representing the majority of the population (I hope). To all of you, be happy and enjoy life in Portugal.
