The new law legalising euthanasia returned, this Friday, to Parliament. The measure received green light from most of the parties with parliamentary seats.

The Socialist Party, along with the Liberal Initiative, the Left Bloc, the PAN and the Free Party voted in favour. Also, there were also seven PSD MPs who voted in favour of the measure. The Chega and PCP parties voted against.

The decree should now head to Belém for the hands of the President of the Republic after Easter. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa may then opt for promulgation, veto or referral to the Constitutional Court.

Euthanasia has been discussed for five years, despite having already been approved in Parliament. During this period there was a parliamentary lead for the law, then four final approvals, three rejections of the President of the Republic (one political and two constitutional) and two failures in the Constitutional Court.
