In a statement, the National Republican Guard states that the operation, which runs until June 19, is being carried out within the scope of the annual planning carried out by the European Traffic Police Network (RoadPol), an organisation created to improve road safety.

The GNR emphasises that these European-wide operations have as their main purpose the creation of a safer road environment.

The GNR highlights that driving under the influence of alcohol or psychotropic substances is "a risk factor that has been the object of increasing attention in road safety policies at a European level".

Last year, the GNR detected almost 29,500 drivers with a blood alcohol level (BAC) above that allowed by law and 13,184 were arrested.
