The list, compiled by Lusa, orders 496 educational establishments by the average achieved on the 2022 national secondary exams. The private colleges stood out once again, with the best public school descending eight spaces compared to last year.

The students of Vouzela secondary school, a town in Beira Alta, in the district of Viseu, obtained the best average grade of 13.37 among public schools.

Following the small town are the notably more urban schools of D. Filipa de Lencastre in Lisbon, Infanta D. Maria in Coimbra, and Secundária do Restelo, also in Lisbon.

While the public schools fell on the general ranking, the grades also fell slightly: Vouzela’s average is 13.37 while the average grade of last year’s best public school, Escola Artística António Arroio, in Lisbon, had an average of 13.58.

When looking at the entire ranking, first place goes to the Grande Colégio Universal, in Porto, with an average grade almost 3 values greater than in Vouzela, at 16.37. This is followed by Colégio Efanor, in Matosinhos (16.3 values), the Colégio Dom Diogo de Sousa, in Braga (16), and the Colégio Nossa Senhora do Rosário, in Porto (15.91), which drops to 4th after spending several years on the top spot of Lusa’s ranking.

Once again, students in private colleges had better than average results: the national average for private students was 12.9 while public students got 11.2 on average.

At the bottom of the table, you’ll find 9 public schools and a single private institution, and 8 of those 10 are found in Lisbon, with the others being in Coimbra and the Azores.
