The data are part of the V National Survey on the Consumption of Psychoactive Substances in the General Population 2022, promoted by the Service of Intervention in Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies (SICAD), which portrays the most recent information on the use of illicit and licit substances, gambling and screen time.

Among the psychoactive substances studied, tobacco is the second (below alcohol) with the most widespread experience of consumption, with around 50% of the population aged between 15 and 64 declaring having consumed tobacco at some point in their lives, according to the survey that begun in 2001, having been replicated in 2007, 2012, 2016/17 and in 2022, under the responsibility of a research team from the Interdisciplinary Center for Social Sciences at Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

“The prevalence of current consumption (in the last 30 days) is always lower than that recorded in the last year. This is due to the fact that the number of experiences without continuity or abandonment during this period does not exceed the new experiences in the last month”, refer to the authors of the study, which has a sample of 12,000 respondents, representative of the population.
