“In collaboration with Lisbon Metro, and for the first time in Portugal, MEO has implemented a 5G network and further reinforced the 4G network which covers the tunnels and each station,” the company stated.

With this, users of the red line stations can make use of strong internet connection to call people, stream, share, download and upload “with greater speed and reliability” during journeys.

The red line connects São Sebastião station to the airport. “This process of modernising the technological infrastructure on the rest of the Lisbon Metro lines until 2025,” MEO explained.

This implementation is part of a project for the innovation and modernisation of the Lisbon Metro infrastructure, and it’s been announced less than a month until World Youth Day.

“For the Lisbon Metro it’s important to continue working towards developing solutions that fulfil the needs and expectations of our clients, improving continuously the quality of service we provide,” the president of the Lisbon Metro Area Administration Council, Vítor Domingues dos Santos, was cited as saying in the press release.

“It was never distinctly digital, the availability of information in real-time has been proving itself more and more to be essential for improving the current and future user experience for those who use the metro, thus contributing towards sustainable transport,” he concludes.

Chief technology officer of Altice Portugal, João Teixeira, has stated that the company wishes to “continue” being a pioneer, through technology, of “innovative solutions capable of changing the world for the better.”

“We know that 5G brings a world of possibilities and opportunities, of speed, haste and efficiency” and “it’s just that which we also want to offer passengers onboard the Lisbon Metro,” the CTO continued.

“This operation follows through on Altice’s promise to invest in modernising mobile networks and the strong investment in 5G coverage in Portugal, with 91% of the country’s population already covered,” the company stated.
