In a nail-biting game, The Roses stepped onto the court for their first-ever cup final game…. But despite having already beaten the Australian Diamonds once in the competition, a 45/61 defeat saw England leaving South Africa with the Silver.

The stellar performances in Cape Town will do wonders for the popularity of the sport across Europe…..and Netball Portugal is already on a roll!

Following the success of the first Portugal-only netball tournament in the spring, there was a clear demand for more team sports for women, and so Netball Portugal was established to recognise, promote and grow the sport here.

At the start of 2023, there were only three clubs in the whole of the country (The Silver Coast Sirens, Leoas Netball Sotavento and Lagos Fireballs), but just in time for the new season, we’re in talks with supporting three more clubs to set up in Lisbon, Central Portugal and Albufeira, with the addition of more walking netball teams at the existing clubs. Walking Netball provides an ideal opportunity to get into the game for ladies that are working on their fitness or recovering from injury.

Netball is a game that empowers women to come together and support each other on and off the court. Many of the women in contact with Netball Portugal haven’t ever played or haven’t played since school, and the combined playing and club experiences of the organisers along with the support of Netball Europe means that there is already a community in place to encourage ladies to get involved, try something new and develop their own sporting abilities.

With another tournament planned in Obidos for the 25th of November, teams and individuals are invited to email to register for both running and walking netball.
