Ronaldo, winner of the trophy five times (2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017), has always been on the list of finalists since 2004, the year in which he debuted in 12th place.

In addition to the five he won, Ronaldo finished in second place six times and third once, for a total of 12 appearances on the podium.

Before Ronaldo, only Eusébio and Figo were awarded the trophy. Eusébio won in 1965, when only European players were eligible, while Figo won in 2000, at a time when the prize had already been open to all players who played for European teams.

The list of 30 nominees also highlights the return of Argentine Lionel Messi, absent from the finals in 2022, after being awarded the trophy on seven occasions.

The Ballon d'Or will be awarded to the winner on October 30th, during a gala that will take place at the Théâtre du Châtelet, in Paris.
