The head of state arrived in the United States of America on Sunday night to participate in the general debate of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, after a five-day official visit to Canada, and will remain in New York until Friday.

Today, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will also have a meeting with the president of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, Dennis Francis, a diplomat from Trinidad and Tobago, and will also participate in a summit on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

At the end of the day, there will be a cocktail with members of The Council of the Portuguese Diaspora and some Portuguese residents of New York.

The President of the Republic will speak on the first day of general debate of the General Assembly, on Tuesday.

According to the head of state, the presence of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, at this session of the United Nations General Assembly, in New York, will make the war in Ukraine an "unpostponable issue".

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa highlighted that, on Wednesday, there will be a "so-called open Security Council", in which he will participate, "to discuss only Ukraine".

In New York, both the President of the Republic and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, will have bilateral meetings with among other objectives, promote Portugal's candidacy for a place as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2027-2028.
