A statement reads that the decision to close took into account “various opinions, including those from Mafra City Council, the Territorial Command of the GNR and the Directorate of the National Palace of Mafra, supported by information from Civil Protection to firefighters, among others.”
The ceremony in question is the wedding of the daughter of the Duke of Bragança.
According to the National Palace, “the tight security operations inside and outside the building, the traffic restrictions and the organisation of popular festivities in the D. João V Terreiro make it unfeasible to open the palace to the public”.
I thought the Portuguese Monarchy was gone for good since 1910! Apparently, I'm completely wrong! National monuments and public places are still here for their private and exclusive use whenever they decide to do so!

This is a national monument, why should the rich and "entited" be allowed to have it closed - security is their problem, don't make it everyones

Totally agree with the two opinions above. Monarchy and the Establishment still run Portugal. The “working” classes still ….oh no I can’t continue with the analogy because they don’t till the fields and run the economy ? It’s largely foreign people who do both tasks while locals complain about them ! Maybe I’m wrong but it’s seems to me that the country has gone soft with the EU money burning holes in Government trousers !! Time to wake up Portugal you’re lovely people but clever work and tough decisions are required to move to the next level.

Can we consider this country be considered a democracy when those in power do what they like when they like with no comebacks. What an absolute farce this is, says it all about Portugal sadly.

It appears that the country is still ruled by the Braganza dynasty with social disparity still rife!

There should be a million comments down here.
What kind of mentality Organises, Agrees and Attends this level of Inequalty?
I can handle Riches but I'm struggling with Greed.
A republic, based on the Latin phrase res publica ('public affair'), is a state in which political power rests with the public and their representatives—in contrast to a Monarchy!!!
