“In the accumulated period from January to August, the total number of overnight stays was 2,631,226, representing an increase of 15.3% compared to the same period last year. Regarding guests, the total number was 825 thousand, an increase of 15.7% compared to the same period last year. During this period, the average stay was 3.19 days”, reads a report on tourist activity in the region, for August.

According to SREA, August 2023 was the month with the highest number of overnight stays in hotels, rural tourism and local accommodation in the region, since August 2021, with a total of 560.8 thousand overnight stays, which represents “a year-on-year increase of 9.2%”.

“In the country, in August, overnight stays showed a positive year-on-year variation of 1.4%”, says the regional statistics service.

The national market recorded a drop of 10.4% compared to August 2022, with 123.4 thousand overnight stays, just 22% of the total.

On the other hand, overnight stays by foreign tourists increased by 16.3%, now representing 78% of the total, with 437.4 thousand records.

Spanish market

Spain stood out as the main external source market in August, with 74.9 thousand overnight stays, equivalent to 17.1% of total overnight stays from residents abroad, having also registered the highest year-on-year growth (46.5%).

France, with 64.4 thousand overnight stays (14.7%), and Germany, with 60.7 thousand overnight stays (13.9%), are also among the foreign markets with the greatest weight.

It was among tourists from Denmark (-26.2), Brazil (-15.4) and the United Kingdom (-11.8) that the biggest drops were recorded.
