Around Classic - Lisbon Classical Music Festival, organised by Lisboa Cultura/EGEAC and the cultural association MegaClassic, has as institutional partners the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and RTP and, as artistic director, Miguel Leal Coelho, former administrator of the Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB), where he assumed the operational direction of events such as the Festa da Música and Dias da Música, and programmer Paula Fonseca, also former head of the CCB, as executive director.
Taking place over a weekend, the festival aims to "challenge perceptions [of classical music] and make this universe more accessible to everyone", assuming "the mission of democratising" access to this expression, according to the organisers.
The period orchestras Os Músicos do Tejo and Ludovice Ensemble, cellists Filipe Quaresma and Pavel Gomziakov, harpsichordist Kenneth Weiss, pianists Artur Pizarro and Miguel Borges Coelho, saxophonist Ricardo Toscano and accordionist João Barradas are some of the protagonists of the 15 concerts announced, all of them around Bach, on the 340th anniversary of the composer's birth.
The concentration of 15 concerts, over the course of a weekend, in municipal concert halls, between Parque Mayer and the neighbouring Avenida da Liberdade, is similar to a model of previous initiatives, such as Os Dias da Música (2007-2019) and Festa da Música (2000-2006), by the CCB, which mobilised tens of thousands of spectators, for more than a hundred concerts. The first edition of the Music Festival, in 2000, was dedicated to Bach on the 250th anniversary of the death of the Leipzig master.
