The process of abolishing the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) is scheduled for October 29th and the powers of this security service will be transferred to seven organizations, one of these entities being the Agency for Integration, Migrations and Asylum (AIMA), where around 600 non-police SEF employees will be transferred.

AIMA, chaired by Luís Goes Pinheiro, will succeed the SEF in its functions in administrative matters related to foreign citizens and the High Commission for Migrations (ACM) in matters of reception and integration of immigrants in Portugal.

There are also 59 SEF workers who will go to the Institute of Registration and Notary Affairs (IRN), which now ensures the skills in granting and issuing the Portuguese electronic passport and handling renewals of residence permits.

Speaking to Lusa, the president of the Union of Foreigners and Borders Service Employees (SINSEF), Artur Girão, lamented "the lack of definition" and stated that there are less than 15 days left before the end of SEF and the workers have not yet received any clarification, “They don't even know where they're going”.

Artur Girão also stated that, to date, he still does not know the location where AIMA's headquarters will be located, only knowing that “SEF employees will immediately remain at the SEF facilities”, in Porto Salvo, in the municipality of Oeiras.
