According to statistics on transport activity, published by the National Statistics Institute (INE), in the third quarter, CNN Portugal reports “53.2 million passengers traveled by train (+19.1%; +12.8% in the 2nd Q 2023)”, corresponding to an increase of 15.3% compared to the quarter of 2019, before the pandemic.
The metro transported 63.7 million passengers in that period, a year-on-year increase of 16.2% (it had risen 18% in the second quarter) and a decrease of 1.8% compared to the same quarter of 2019.
In the case of airports, 20.9 million passengers were handled between July and September, corresponding to a growth of 13.1% compared to the same period in 2022 (+14.9% in the second quarter; +11.3% compared to the third quarter of 2019).
In the period under analysis, passenger transport by river increased by 19.9% compared to the third quarter of last year, (+18.7% in the 2nd Q 2023), reaching 7.4 million passengers and increasing 4.1 % compared to the same quarter of 2019.
Regarding the transport of goods, there was an increase by rail (+2.3%) and decreases by sea (-5.6%), air (-6.1%) and road (-10.9 %).
Compared to the same quarter of 2019, freight transport by air, sea and rail increased (+1.4%, +2% and +0.8%, in the same order), with transport by road decreasing (-16 .6%).
