“In [October] 2020 I expressed my total disagreement and rejection of the creation of a Super League. Three years later, I maintain my opinion. I think it's a bad idea for football, as it violates all the principles of sporting merit”, said the director, in a note published on the FPF's official website.

Fernando Gomes reaffirmed his position after the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) considered the decision by FIFA and UEFA to ban footballers and clubs from participating in private competitions, such as the Super League proposed on April 18, to be contrary to European legislation.

“If it comes to fruition, it would greatly harm football as a whole and Portuguese clubs in particular. Therefore, the FPF was, is, and will be firmly and firmly against competitions organised outside the federations and leagues, and firmly supports the European sporting model”, he concluded.

The CJEU, the EU's highest administrative body, ruled that UEFA and FIFA abused their "dominant position" in their action against the creation of the controversial football Super League.

Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are the resisters among the 15 founders of the original project - although only 12 were revealed -, which called for a competition with 20 clubs, which was contested by different quarters, from the sport's structures to national governments, passing through the fans themselves.

In October 2022, the company A22 was created, promoting the project, which readapted the initial plan, in February 2023, under new principles and a model with 60 to 80 clubs, which was open, without permanent members and based on sporting merit.
