The event is a partnership between DWM - Deutsche Wein Marketing, Guarda Municipal Council and the Beira Interior Regional Wine Commission and will take place under the banner of OIV – International Organization of Vine and Wine.

The competition will take place from 26 to 28 April, at the Art Gallery of the Municipal Theatre of Guarda, as revealed by the promoters at a press conference held at Solar do Vinho da Beira Interior, in Guarda.

The president of the Beira Interior Regional Wine Commission, Rodolfo Queirós, highlighted during the presentation of the event that a great effort was needed to hold an event of this size in the interior of the country, but said he believes that “it will be a challenge with enormous success”.

The director considered that the initiative would give notoriety and focus to the region and that it would “further leverage the Beira Interior brand”.

In turn, the president of the Municipal Council of Guarda, Sérgio Costa, states that the event is the corollary of everything that has been done in recent years and that “it will help to cement the brand of Guarda and its capacity to organise".

The mayor considered that this is a very important event for the region and also for Guarda as the district capital, headquarters of the Beiras and Serra da Estrela Intermunicipal Community and territory of three Portuguese wine regions: Beira Interior, Douro and Dão.

For Sérgio Costa, the Portugal Wine Trophy will also be “a beautiful appetizer” for this year’s edition of Guarda WineFest, which takes place from the 12th to the 14th of July.

The operations director of DWM - Deutsche Wein Marketing, Henk Gibramczik, was very pleased that it was possible to organize the event in Guarda, highlighting the fantastic wine regions.

The promoters highlighted that during the event, producers from the Beira Interior region will have “special conditions for their participation in the event”, which will also feature tours through the region's wineries.

During the three days of the event, the wines will be tasted by an independent panel of experts made up of winemakers, sommeliers, masters of wine, experienced traders, winegrowers, and journalists.

The products will be classified according to the rules and guidelines of the OIV and the International Union of Winemakers, using the 100-point classification system, in a blind-tasting mode. The competition includes categories of red wine, white wine, rosé wine, orange wine, green wine and sparkling wine.
