The plaque honouring the many shows that have been filmed in the region was erected on Friday at 3 p.m. outside Mellon's Shop on the South Lotts Road.

South Lotts Road doubled as a Belfast Street for Jim Sheridan's “In the Name of the Father,” which starred Daniel Day-Lewis as Gerry Conlon and was largely filmed in Ringsend.

Along with films like Belfast, Educating Rita, and Into the West, the region was also used to film "The General," starring Brendan Gleeson.

Ringsend was also the site of several music videos, including those for Boyzone, the Cranberries, the Shoos, and many more groups. Eric Cantona, the former Manchester United player, also filmed a commercial there shortly after he retired from sports.

The recently dedicated plaque, according to Eddie Bohan, Chairperson of the Ringsend, and District Historical Society, is an attempt to commemorate Ringsend's past as a location for filming.

“We’re getting an influx of new people in the area, and we want to bring the story of Ringsend to them,” Bohan stated.

Ringsend was used as a filming location for several Troubles-set films because the locals' brickwork was eerily similar to Belfast's.

A member of the Ringsend and District Historical Society, Paul Brannock told the Irish Independent that he still recalls as a youngster having to paint graffiti on the walls for shows that revolved around the Troubles.

“We were given £10 each, we had a task of painting graffiti on a wall, and we had great fun,” Brannock said to the Irish Independent. “It's fair to say the local sweet shop did well.”

Mellon's Shop owner Colm Henehan remembered the large throng who gathered that day when Cantona arrived to film a commercial for Euromillions.

“The crowds here were amazing that day and everybody was looking for his autograph, and so he could barely get out of his car,” Henehan stated.
