“Wine tourism is a reference for tourism in the Alentejo, which not only boosts the arrival of tourists to the region but also contributes to the dynamism of the Alentejo economy”, highlighted the president of CVRA, Francisco Mateus.

Quoted in a statement released today by CVRA, the same person in charge recalled that, in this region, “the winemaking tradition is ancient” and that the wines produced are “of quality and internationally recognised”.

And there are “diversified activity programs in Alentejo, something that attracts more and more tourists interested in getting to know the region, the culture, gastronomy and people of Alentejo”, highlighted Francisco Mateus.

The wine commission indicated that, compared to 2022, wine tourism increased by 27% last year.

Contacted by Lusa agency, a CVRA source stated that, in absolute terms, last year, wine tourism in Alentejo registered a total of 160,148 visitors, compared to 126,030 visitors in the previous year.

This means that there were 34,118 more tourists looking for wine programs in the region in 2023, compared to 2022.

According to data collected by CVRA, “the national market leads the ‘ranking’ of visitors, representing 50% of all those interested” in Alentejo Wines.

In addition to the ‘top 3’, which includes Portuguese tourists from Brazil and the United States of America (USA), other countries “have been recording notable growth” in terms of wine tourism in the region.

These are the cases of Switzerland, Spain, France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom, indicated the wine commission, also highlighting that “Canada was the nationality that recorded the greatest increase, in the order of 75%”.
