The Narrow Water Bridge building contract has officially been given. Michelle O'Neill, the first minister of Stormont, praised the news.

“This will be transformative for south Down and the Cooley areas, creating a wealth of opportunities and unlocking the huge potential to create good quality jobs, boost tourism and create a stronger, all-Ireland economy,” she stated.

A 280-meter cable-stayed bridge supported by two towers will connect the R173 in Omeath with the A2 Newry to Warrenpoint dual carriageway as part of the project.

It will open to allow boats to travel through to the Newry Canal and have dedicated lanes for cars, bicycles, and pedestrians.

Financial support for the project has come from the government's Shared Island Fund.

It will take many years to finish the bridge, with an estimated cost of about €60 million.
