In August of last year, the 154-year-old bridge was closed to allow for necessary structural repairs.

It enables drivers to cross the River Boyne without entering the town core of Drogheda or using the highway.

Protesters had expressed dissatisfaction at the bridge's closure, claiming that drivers would either have to pay a toll to use the highway or deal with excessive traffic in Drogheda.

Residents also bemoaned the diversion's addition to the town's already extreme congestion.

The residents of Tullyallen and Donore who lived closest to the bridge were the ones who were most impacted by the shutdown.

Tourists and travellers who are visiting the adjacent site of the Battle of the Boyne also use it regularly.

Numerous projects were completed, such as rebuilding the approach and departure barriers to the south of the bridge, installing new cross beams, and resurfacing the road.

The public has been informed by Louth County Council that a 5-ton weight limit is still in effect.
