At the end of the weekly meeting of the Funchal Chamber, the president of the municipality, the independent Cristina Pedra, said that the tourist tax, worth two euros per day and a maximum of seven, “comes into force from October 1st”, there are “exemptions, particularly for children up to 12 years of age”.

In the case of cruises, this fee will be applied from January 2025.

The person responsible indicated that the first funds raised by the end of the year “should bring around one million and 600 thousand euros”, which “will be used both for investments (new equipment) and for maintenance works”.

As Funchal is a very popular place for tourists, “equipment will be purchased for urban cleaning, worth 302 thousand euros”, and for “repairing (road) pavements, worth 550 thousand euros”.

Another 336 thousand euros will be invested in “garden maintenance”, with “228 thousand euros planned for cultural events” and 144 thousand euros for mobility, she added.

Cristina Pedra also highlighted that there will be a 2.5% contribution for hotel units.
