In reality, there are many shelters who offer abused and abandoned animals a proper home, cared for and fed until they are able to be re-homed. One such shelter ARA, Animal Rescue Algarve near Loulé called ‘Cabanita’ offers an ideal sanctuary for young and old animals. João Ferreira as General Manager, has the unenviable task of making decisions of the animals’ outcome. “We never turn an animal away. Some are re-homed very quickly, others take time. But we are proud of our track record.” He is a happy busy man and looks after the volunteer and full-time staff at ARA.

Long-term friends APAA, Association for Protection Animals Algarve, have many opportunities to thank ARA and their work. “Legacy of course is a promising project for those of us, reaching advancing years with pets.” A smile. “Sometimes it is an illness that catches us unawares.” What do you do with pet(s) that belong to you? ‘Legacy’ looks after your pet(s) first of all by checking on them, re-chip and re-home to proper caring families.

Both APAA and ARA, strive hard with the care of abandoned, abused animals. It is of little comfort that they are appalled by the state of the animals, as the public, will no doubt, lump all charities together. A favourite pastime. “When one charity is under investigation, then all other good people are subjected to the same suspicion.”

Jenny Clarke President of APAA has many hours of hard work with hardened animal lovers. Rescuing, re-homing, caring. “It costs time, money and dedication. So when we hear of a rogue charity or association we are totally dumbfounded.” Jenny’s team at APAA are all willing to stand by their motto ‘Here to Help’. Sid Richardson the head of ARA, has no time for these sorts of people. Having worked hard to set up the ideal home, and sanctuary for the animals that come to them for care and rehabilitation. It is indeed a difficult subject to have to come to terms with.

In reality, APAA is spending time and effort helping those who are unable to help themselves. Or, need some support. If, you are reading this, be assured that not all charities, welfare institutions, and associations dealing with animals or indeed children should be tarred with the same brush.

Please remember an animal is your responsibility for life. It is not just a passing whim or plaything.
