A “pristine” ocean habitat off the coast of Spain is to become the country’s first all-marine national park, dominated by reefs, caves, tunnels and peaks of volcanic origin where corals of all kinds, algae, sponges and beautiful gorgonians abound.

Home to one of the world’s largest communities of beaked whales and deep-water cetacean, Mar de las Calmas, is located off the coast of El Hierro, a Canary Island.
The future park will contribute to fulfilling the commitment that "at least 30 percent" of the country's marine space "will have some form of protection by 2030", Teresa Ribeira, Ecology Minister, assured.
