The mayor of Beja, Paulo Arsénio, detailed the situation in Porto Peles, where this morning there was a "tornado or mini-tornado", around 8:15 am.

According to the mayor, there is damage to roofs, windows, awnings and at least one vehicle.

"The damage was significant, but it did not affect the residential areas of these houses. It affected annex areas, which are not an integral part of these residential areas," he explained, in statements to SIC Notícias.

When asked about the extent of the damage, Paulo Arsénio said that the damage was recorded in a warehouse and "two or three houses."

"The number is not significant. Let's say the tornado passed through one of the streets and there are not many people living on those streets. One of the houses has storage next to it," he highlighted.

The mayor explained that the district Civil Protection is operational on site, as well as the National Republican Guard and that the work now taking place is, above all, in terms of cleaning.

"There was a blocked road, which is now clear," he said.

Although no victims were recorded, Paulo Arsénio reported that the population, which is "very elderly", was "scared" and that "they had not had any similar experience."

"They hadn't had such a big scare. It was just a few seconds and very, very intense. It started with a bolt of lightning and then a clap of thunder," he said, adding that the situation scared "the population a lot", as the area was experiencing thunderstorms, particularly in Beja.
