The sleepy countryside looks inviting to all who wish to go for a picnic, and head for the cooler hills but all is asked, take your rubbish with you. Do not endanger the wildlife or build BBQ’s or leave natural sun attraction sources around.
Bottles. Whether plastic or glass are a menace over a long period of heat can ignite. Jenny Clarke, President of APAA, has the unenviable task, like fellow country dwellers to make sure everything is as ‘tickety-boo’ as possible on and around her patch. “We have the Bombeiros to thank for all their hard work.” Located not far, is an almost accidental Fire Station, an ex-primary school in Senhora do Verde.
The Association for Protection of Animals Algarve, often take supplies to the volunteers to keep them going during the ‘vigilant’ season. “We have to ensure that the animals are kept as safe as possible.” Checking the ever-growing feral cat-colonies is important. Zélia Santos and her teammates are making sure all the felines are safe and out of harm’s way. People don’t realise that they are responsible for their own land, ensuring all the scrub is cleared and doesn’t pose a fire-hazard. Cripes! Trees, and bushes all need to be cleared if too near buildings. Not sure? Check it out with the Bombeiros.
Thankfully they are never caught cat-napping!
Whilst the heat is on, many are taking the time off to escape the heat and off to the beaches. “If it is too hot for young or older people. Then it is too hot for taking your dogs!” Jenny is sure that a lot of fatalities amongst our older animal friends are due to overheating. “Left panting in a corner without sufficient fresh water, or shelter is a killer in this weather. Please be kind and make sure they are comfortable and out of the glare of the sun.” Right, Cats got it?
APAA’s Silves Charity shop has just had a makeover. Check it out! The Sister shop in Alvor has also had a re-shuffle. If you are looking for a change of wardrobe, and good value for money items, then why not visit and help their SNiP campaign whilst enjoying the nice cool shops and friendly staff? The Spaying & Neutering Programme is fully operational, raising much needed money for abandoned animals, helping other shelters and charities and the ever-increasing feral cat problem. If you want to help or have any good ideas for APAA to raise money please let them know.
